1. Geospatial information service industry expected to grow
to a \10 trillion market by 2013
A government study group consisting of industry experts
discussed prospects for the geospatial information service
industry, including a view that this market will grow to about
\10 trillion in the next five years, or by 2013, from about \4
trillion now, and compiled a future vision of the industry.
2. METI to promote the G Space Project, which involves the
construction of infrastructure for information distribution
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) formulated
the G Space Project, a policy package that it should implement
in order to materialize the future vision. The project consists of
the following three pillars, including the development of
infrastructure for geospatial information distribution:
(a) Development of infrastructure for the distribution of
geospatial information
(b) Advanced application of geospatial information in industry
and people’s life
(c) Creation of an environment that facilitates the effective use
of positioning information acquired from the positioning satellite
METI will extensively promote this project as part of government
efforts to “create and develop new industries and new services
based on geospatial information,” a goal spelled out in the Basic
Plan for Geospatial Information (approved by the Cabinet in April
2008).
Examples of policies included in the package
Construction of a three-dimensional geospatial information database
model Regional revitalization projects based on geospatial information
Development of technologies useful for industries, such as those for
the “energy ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems)” scheme.
